About My Top 750 Films
I see nearly everything at some time, & see again anything worthwhile.
I have most all of my personal faves on DVD (with ones not yet commercially available courtesy of classic movies dvd), & only keep films repeatedly enjoyable.
My fave films are eclectic, multi-genre, complicated, or just fun. Great visuals, good directing, strong, quirky, surreal or unusual stories & dialogue, actors with distinctive personalities (very few today), music that is touching or stirring-- all combine to make a movie worth seeing more than twice. Everything changes. Some of current top choices (in bold above) may change. Many films will drop from the whole list, others added.
Criticism is always subjective. I have seen most of the great silent films at least a couple of times, but only Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc is repeatedly enjoyable. For me, it was not until the 1940s that sound films reached a modern technical level, with good prints available today. As a photographer, I'm very disposed toward visual quality.
I have a liking for Westerns (15% of my collection), & for Hitchcock, Truffaut, Peckinpah, Wilder, Bogart, James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Marlon Brando, John Wayne. Today, Werner Herzog & Clint Eastwood are the two prolific, consistently interesting directors working. I have a special feeling for films with spiritual content, whether obvious (The Gospel According to St. Matthew) or subtle: Star Wars, Chariots of Fire, E.T., Blade Runner.
Few comedies or musicals engage after a couple of viewings. Only 5 'animated' films in my collection, no Disney's: Watership Down is tops because of its story, 2 anime, 1 pixar & Linklater's Waking Life.
A few of listed are favorites of my life partner, Henrietta, with whom i re-watch one or two films every night while working.
